Georgian opposition appeals to Abkhazia's de facto president

03 September 2011 [09:00] - TODAY.AZ
The Free Georgia opposition party sent a message to newly elected de facto president of Abkhazia, Alexander Ankvab. The party believes this election will allow to search for new ways to resolve the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict, Party’s Political Secretary Tengiz Omanidze said at today’s news conference.

Omanidze said they hope that this will be a turning point in relations between the two brotherly peoples with a view to overcome existing animosities. He said the conflict resolution and taking effective steps for the peaceful resolution of the existing contradictions meet the interests of both Georgian and Abkhaz peoples. The party stands for that the conflicting parties have committed themselves to non-resumption of fire.

"We stand for the peaceful resolution of the conflict. The Saguramo manifest of 2008, which was fixed by the will of the founders of the organization for the peaceful resolution of the conflict, is evidence to this," Omanidze said, adding that a military solution to the conflict is completely unacceptable. "The Party is ready to take part in all processes aimed at a peaceful settlement. The party uses all its resources to achieve this goal. "

Military actions were launched in the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia in August 2008. Georgian troops entered Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia and later Russian troops occupied the city and drove the Georgian military back to Georgia. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on Aug. 26 and established diplomatic relations with them on Sept. 9, 2008.
