Turkey prepares new constitution

02 September 2011 [08:40] - TODAY.AZ
Turkey 's ruling Justice and Development Party has begun activities on drafting a new constitution, Turkish media reported. A special commission has been established to prepare the new constitution. The commission will be working to create a more simplified text of the Constitution.

The head of the commission Ekrem Erdem has criticized the existing constitution, calling it confusing for the most of population.

In late October, the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will send a letter to the leaders of opposition Republican People's Party and Nationalist Movement Party, with a call to take part in negotiations on drafting a new constitution.

Turkey 's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), headed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, achieved a convincing victory in parliamentary elections on June 12, gaining 50 percent of the votes.

As a result, Erdogan's party gained 326 seats in the new Parliament, enabling it to form a single-party government, but does not allow to independently adopt the new draft constitution in the Parliament and hold a referendum on it.
