Turkey appoints new ambassador to Libya

01 September 2011 [17:18] - TODAY.AZ
The Turkish Embassy in Tripoli has resumed its activity, Turkish media reported. Ankara has appointed Ali Kamaladdin as the new ambassador. Alongside other members of the diplomatic office, he has already left for Libya.

The Libyan Transitional National Council moved its headquarters from the stronghold in Benghazi to Tripoli on Aug. 25.

It is still unknown where Colonel Muammar Gaddafi is hiding. Just a few days ago, the former leader asked the people of Sirte to unite.

In mid-February, Libya faced mass demonstrations calling for the withdrawal of Col Gaddafi, who ruled the country for over 40 years. The demonstrations then turned into an armed confrontation between government forces and rebels. The UN Security Council imposed a no-fly zone over Libya on March 17.
