U.S. will assist Georgia in building ship repair yard

U.S. Ambassador to Georgia John Bass and Deputy Interior Minister Zaza Gogava will today lay a foundation, near the Poti port, of a shop for repair of the Georgian Coast Guard’s ships. The U.S. government will allocate funds worth $ 4 million for the project, the U.S. Embassy reported on Thursday.

Construction will be led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A local construction company will perform the construction. The shop will be equipped with modern facilities.

The ship repair yard construction is a part of the U.S. government's "Export Control and Border Security" program. This program funds is $ 10 million. With the help of this program, the U.S. assisted the Georgia Coast Guard to repair two major patrol vessels and perform a complete modernization of the third patrol boat. The U.S. hopes that the program will contribute to the development of shipbuilding industry in Georgia.

With the program "Export Control and Border Security"m the U.S. government is helping Georgia to protect the security of its citizens and foreign visitors.
