“The decisions on the protection of the Caspian Sea’s environment are expected to be made at the next conference of the littoral states in Russia”, the Russian ecology ministry’s statement reads, RIA-Novosti reported.
“The sides are planning to coordinate and sign the protocols on Tehran Convention. These documents will consider evaluation of the environment impact, protection of biodiversity and protection of the Caspian Sea from the pollution”.
The meeting in Russia will also determine the location of the secretariat of the Convention on protection of the Caspian environment.
The five littoral states of the Caspian Sea signed an agreement on August 10-12 in Aktau, Kazakhstan, on protection of the sea from the oil pollution. The Russian Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources considers that this agreement will open a new phase in the protection of the Caspian environment. “This is first such document signed since the adoption of the Tehran Convention in 2003. It will provide practical fulfillment of the protection of the Caspian Sea’s environment”.
