Suicides increase in Iran

The number of suicides in Iran rose by 4.9 percent in the first three months of the Iranian calendar year, Forensic Medical Examination Center head Ahmad Shodjai said today.

Shodjai said 952 people committed suicide in Iran, 274 of whom were women and 678 men.

He added that last year the figure was 870.

"Compared to 2009, the suicides rose by 17 percent," Shodjai said.

He said an average of 10 people commit suicide in Iran every day.
