Turkish opposition accepts oath

Turkey's leading opposition party Republican People's Party, after long negotiations with the ruling Justice and Development Party, today stopped boycotting the new parliament and accepted the oath, CNN Turk reports.

Republican People's Party stated boycotting the new parliament to protest against the refusal of the court to release the two MPs - journalist Mustafa Balbay and professor of medicine Mehmet Haberala, elected from the party on June 12 parliamentary elections.

The leadership of the Republican Party and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), headed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Monday approved a joint document, which enshrines the agreement on accepting legislative initiatives, enabling to free the detained MPs and prevent recurrence of similar situations in the future.

After it, the representatives of RPP, which has gained 135 seats in the 550-seat parliament, accepted the oath, which allows them to now officially begin work in the legislature.
