CTBT: NPT signing depends on Iranian authorities

30 June 2011 [17:48] - TODAY.AZ
Iran's signing of the nuclear weapons non-proliferation treaty depends on the authorities, Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBT) Tibor Toth told media.

"This decision is fully dependent on Iran, because there are all the conditions for signing the treaty," Toth said.

Iran has not ratified the Treaty, so that it can not come into force. Ratification would allow the international community to move forward on this issue.

Iran's nuclear program has been causing concern since 2003, when the IAEA became aware of its clandestine activity.

In late 2003, Iran signed the Additional Protocol to the NPT and voluntarily announced about the suspension of uranium enrichment.
However, it returned to this activity later.

Toth recalled that the multilateral agreement was signed by 182 countries.
