Ahmadinejad: Chemical weapons tool of West terrorism

28 June 2011 [20:48] - TODAY.AZ
Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has described the use of chemical weapons against Iranian civilians during the 1980s war with Iraq as international terrorism led by Western powers, Press TV reported.

"Today we are witnessing the emergence of an ominous and evil phenomenon by the name of terrorism, which is undoubtedly the result of moral corruption and desire to dominate others," Ahmadinejad said in a message on the occasion of the anniversary of Iraq's attack to the Iranian city of Sardasht.

Ahmadinejad added that Iraq used chemical weapons provided by Western countries to massacre the innocent and defenseless people of Sardasht "which is an indication of international terrorism led by the West."

"Rulers, groups and people committed to justice, religious and humane values have never adopted such inhumane measures," he added.

On 28th June 1987, Sardasht, near the border with Iraq, was attacked by four bombs containing 250 kilograms (550 lb) of mustard gas. The bombs were dropped in the densely populated town center.

Sardasht is the first town in the world to be gassed. More than 100 people were killed in the attacks.

The real toll, however, is much higher as out of a population of 20,000, some 5,000 people are still suffering severe illnesses including severe respiratory problems and skin disorders ever since.
