Armenian persuades US court that Karabakh is part of Azerbaijan, not Armenia

27 June 2011 [15:20] - TODAY.AZ
A full irony happened in the US where Armenian Samvel Andriasyan persuaded the American court that Karabakh was actually the land of Azerbaijan, not Armenia as first assumed by migration service INS which refused to give the claimant a residence permit in the US.

Departing from Baku to Armenia, Andriasyan's family wasn't greeted well in the motherland. Neighbors mocked them for their accent, called them "Azerbaijani spies" and even try to rape Andriasyan's wife.

In Yerevan, he addressed the Armenian Authorities to give them the status of refugee but the response was "Go to Karabakh and live with other Azerbaijanis". Coming to the US after several years, he asked American authorities to give him residence as a refugee but was refused because first, he spent enough time in Armenia before departing to the US and then Armenian authorities refused the give him residence in "Armenian territory" and gave him adequate proposal.

Appealing against the INS's decision to give him a green card, Andriasyan began to prove the court that the Armenian authorities' proposal to "go to Karabakh and live with other Azerbaijanis" was not the proposal to live in Armenian territory but rather to go back where he came from-Azerbaijan.

The meaning of the proposal caused a debate between the plaintiff (Andriasyan) and defendant (INS – US immigration service). During the debate, INS began to insist that Karabakh was located within the Armenian territory which meant that the Armenian authorities offered him to stay in the Armenian territory. The immigration service then said that in that case, it should be refused to issue refuge status to the plaintiff.

However, the plaintiff adamantly claimed that Karabakh is the territory of Azerbaijan. At the end, INS had to agree with the insistence of Andriasyan and recognize Karabakh as the part of Azerbaijan.
