MP: Turkey needs new constitution for democratization

Amendments to the Constitution of Turkey are necessary for democratization and stability in the country, Turkish MP from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Fevzi Shanverdi.
"Such a Constitution will represent the interests of all political parties and government institutions in the country," Shanverdi told Trend by telephone from Ankara.

The changes to Turkey's constitution envisage amending the provisions on the term of the president's office, Ombudsman's activity and the complication of the ban on political parties. Erdogan also proposes to add changes in the Turkish power to the list.

According to Shanverdi, changes to the constitution will be an important step for Turkey's accession to EU.

"The current constitution impedes democratization and development of the country," said the MP.

The AKP, headed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, won the elections last Sunday as expected, gaining 50 percent of votes. As a result, Erdogan's party will receive 326 seats in the new parliament. The party will be able to form a single-party government.

According to the Turkish Constitution, the government must be formed within 45 days from the date when the president gives the instructions to the party leader.

With regards to the exacerbation of the Kurdish problem after the elections, Shanverdi believes that Kurdish separatists are not able to destabilize the situation in Turkey as the ruling party has implemented many projects to enhance the rights of the Kurdish population.

"The new government plans to make additional investments in the development of the region inhabited by Kurds," he added.
