FM: West seeks to use human rights against Iran

02 June 2011 [15:54] - TODAY.AZ
The West has been trying to turn the issue of human rights to a serious challenge to the Islamic Republic, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said, Press TV reported with reference to ISNA.

"Over the past thirty years, Western countries have been creating challenges for the Islamic Republic of Iran through different methods. And now they have put a lot of effort to introduce human rights issues as the next challenge to the country," Salehi said in an expert meeting on human rights.

Iran has presented a new model for governance and political thoughts and since the model is a rival to Western-style ones, Western countries have initiated a massive propaganda campaign against Iran, Salehi said, adding that human rights was one of the issues used against the Islamic Republic.

He underlined the need for international monitoring of human rights violations in Western countries and added that the Iranian Foreign Ministry will actively pursue the issue.

This comes as the Iranian Parliament has released a full list of 26 US officials wanted by the Islamic Republic for various crimes ranging from rights violations to acts of terror to involvement in drug-trafficking.

The officials on the list include commander of US forces in Iraq Raymond Odierno, USS Vincennes Captain Will Rogers III, former FBI chief Thomas J. Pickard, and the former commander of the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay Geoffrey D. Miller.

Current Guantanamo commander Rear Admiral Jeffery Harbeson and former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld are also among the blacklisted US officials.

Iran censures the West for using human rights as a political tool for piling up pressure on the Islamic Republic.
