Turkey's exports up in April

Exports from Turkey increased 26.5 percent to 11.8 billion USD in April 2011 when compared to April 2010.

Imports also rose 40.2 percent to 20.9 billion USD in the same period, stated TurkStat on Tuesday.

Foreign trade deficit increased 63.4 percent to 9.052 billion USD while exports covering imports dropped from 62.9 percent to 56.8 percent in April 2011 when compared to April 2010.

In the first four months of 2011, exports rose 22.4 percent from 35.4 billion USD to 43.3 billion USD, while imports increased 44.1 percent from 53.4 billion USD to 77.7 billion USD. Foreign trade deficit rose 86.7 percent to 33.6 billion USD, while exports covering imports dropped from 66.3 percent to 56.3 percent in the mentioned period.

In April 2011, "vehicle other than railway or tramway rolling stock, parts thereof" has by far the highest value exported at 1.4 million USD and then "iron and steel" at 1.1 million USD, "boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances" at 1.016 million USD, "electrical machinery and equipment" at 710 million USD and "knitted and crocheted goods and articles thereof" at 706 million USD.

In the same period, the top categories for imports were "mineral fuels and mineral oils" with 4.4 million USD and then "boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances" with 2.5 million USD, "vehicle other than railway or tramway rolling stock, parts thereof" with 1.6 million USD, "iron and steel" with 1.5 million USD, and "electrical machinery and equipment" with 1.4 million USD.

As compared with April 2010, exports to EU rose 34.8 percent to 5.8 million USD in April 2011. The proportion of the EU countries was 48.9 percent in 2011 while it was 45.9 percent in 2010.

In April 2011, the main partner country for exports was Germany with 1.2 million USD increasing by 39.4 percent. For exports, Germany was followed by Italy (792 million USD), the United Kingdom (694 million USD), France (654 million USD) and Iraq (627 million USD).

In April 2011, the top country for Turkey's imports was Germany (2.3 million), records for imports range from China (1.8 million USD), Russia (1.5 million USD) and the USA (1.3 million USD).
