26 May 2011 [14:13] - TODAY.AZ
"European Commission will support construction of South Stream gas pipeline project", EU Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger said during presentation ceremony of the project held in Brussels.

"We will not impose any unreasonable or unjustified level of administrative or regulatory requirements. We will act as fair partners", he added.

"South Stream is not our top priority, but we recognize its value, in particular for Russia, for diversification of routes: "The EU would like to purchase gas from Caspian littoral states directly", said EU Commissioner.

Note that, South Stream Gas pipeline project considers meeting the European need for gas on account of Russian gas. That is why, this project is direct rival of Nabucco project supported by European countries.

The total length will be around 900 km, maximum depth - more than 2 km, and capacity - 63 billion cubic meters of gas a year. For the onshore section of the project, Russia has signed intergovernmental agreements with Austria, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia and Croatia.
