Turkish youth women’s volleyball team clinch historic win

10 May 2011 [11:26] - TODAY.AZ
Turkey won its first international gold medal in volleyball, as the youth women's team became the European champion on Sunday.

Turkey defeated Italy 3-0 in the CEV Youth Volleyball European Championship in Ankara, and became the European champion.

Italy won the silver, and bronze went to Serbia.

"I am proud to have made a mark on Turkish volleyball history," said Turkey’s Italian coach Marco Aurelio Motta.

Motta said he was confident that Turkey had a good generation of players for years to come.

"Those players will bring continued success to Turkish volleyball as long as they keep up the hard work," he said.

Chairman of the Turkish Volleyball Federation, or TVF, said the success came at an important time when clubs are discussing the removal of the foreign player quota.

"I urge our clubs, who want regulations to allow them to purchase more foreign players, to count on those girls," Ahmet Karabıyık said.
