The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that Turkey violated human rights in a lawsuit filed by a Turkish serviceman, and held Turkey to pay 9,000 euro to him for non-pecuniary damage.
In the case of Ersin Pulatli, who was remanded under close arrest for seven days by his immediate superior after going absent without leave from his garrison in April 2007, the court ruled that decision to deprive a serviceman of his liberty must be taken or reviewed by a competent and independent judicial body.
Accordingly, Turkey will pay Pulatli 9,000 euro in respect of non-pecuniary damage and 500 euro in respect of costs and expenses.
