Georgian President suggests launching intensive agriculture and cattle-breeding

28 April 2011 [11:26] - TODAY.AZ
The President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili is displeased with the volume of agricultural work. Mikhail Saakashvili told governors and representatives of local authorities at a meeting in Kaheti, eastern Georgia, that Georgia is an agricultural country and that, nevertheless, only 60 percent of agricultural lands are cultivated in such country.

"We must launch intensive agriculture and cattle-breeding", he said and urged all landowners to start cultivating lands. As for landowners, Saakashvili meant the former officials who had bought large land plots in the 1990s and have not so far begun to cultivate them.

"Some of too choosy officials who had bought 200 hectares of best lands really explored only those areas, which were enough to feed their families, whereas hundreds of families were left with no piece of bread", the President said.

Arable lands in Georgia must be explored at 100 percent, he noted.

"There are no lands in Georgia that could stand idle. One-hundred percent of land must be used," Saakashvili said.
