Turkey set to host major international meetings

20 April 2011 [13:33] - TODAY.AZ
Turkey is set to host two important international meetings in late April and mid-May.

"The High Level Conference on the Future of the European Court of Human Rights" will be held in the Aegean province of İzmir on April 26 and 27 under Turkey's chairmanship of the Council of Europe's decision-making body, the Committee of Ministers, diplomatic sources said.

As part of the meeting, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, the current chair of the Committee of Ministers, will hold a joint press conference with Council of Europe Secretary-General Thorbjorn Jagland and the court’s head, Jean-Paul Costa.

Furthermore, "The 121st Session of the Committee of Ministers" will be held in Istanbul on May 10 and 11. Turkey, which has been holding the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers since November, will hand over the title to Ukraine on the second day of the gathering.

At the end of the meeting, participants are expected to adopt the "Istanbul Declaration," highlighting the council’s important role in maintaining Europe's democratic stability.

Meanwhile, the head of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, or OIC, proposed Tuesday holding an international conference that would establish an unequivocal definition of terrorism.

The U.N. Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee, with the support of the Council of Europe, convened in Strasbourg to hold a special meeting on the theme of "The Prevention of Terrorism" from Tuesday to Thursday.

Speaking at the opening of the gathering, OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu described terrorism as "an abhorrent malady that seeks to destroy the fundamental ethos of human society."
