Over 100 prisoners to be pardoned in Georgia

18 April 2011 [13:13] - TODAY.AZ
The Pardon Commission under the Georgian President issued a recommendation on one-third of the list of prisoners regarding who should be pardoned, Commission Head Elena Tevdoradze said.

She said the committee reviewed more than 330 cases. The commission also agreed to decrease the term of prison sentences by half.

Tevdoradze said President Mikheil Saakashvili will sign a pardon decree by Easter, which this year is celebrated on April 24.

"The recommendation was issued with regards to more than 100 inmates, or about one-third. The list will be submitted to Saakashvili before Easter and he will make a final decision on the issue," Tevdoradze said.

Fourteen women and a minor are among the prisoners.
