Iran to launch gamma radiation center in two years

Iran intends to launch the first gamma-ray multi-purpose radiation center by next two years, taking another major step in nuclear progress, ISNA reported.

Iran has started the project on Thursday in the western city of Sharekord in presence of some officials of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI).

The facility is the third national nuclear plan in Iran which paves the way for economic jump and sufficiency.

The largest and equipped gamma-ray multi-purpose beam facility of the Middle East which is to be built in Iran costs $13,500,000.

Iran has achieved considerable successes in nuclear research over recent years, and applying the high-tech for a broad-range of civilian purposes, including production of radiopharmaceuticals to cure patients suffering cancer.

As a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member state of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran insists on its legal right to utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes including power generation and medical needs.

But the West and the US accuse Tehran of pursuing nuclear weapons. Iran has dismissed the allegation, maintaining that its atomic work solely seeks peaceful purposes.
