The director of Iran National Gas Company Javad Oji said gas exports to Armenia may be increased by six times. Export of Iranian gas to Armenia has increased by 26% reaching 8.5 billion cubic meters, Mehr news agency reports.

In 2004 the Armenian Government initiated construction of Iran-Armenia pipeline. Construction of the first stage (Meghri-Kajaran) was completed in March 2007, while the second (Kajaran-Ararat) - in late 2008. Diameter of the first section makes 711 mm, length - 40 km with a capacity of 1.2 billion cubic meters per year, length of the second section reaches 150 km. By 2019 the sides plan to increase capacity by 2.3 billion cubic meters.

Prior to construction of the pipeline, Armenia received gas only from Russia through Georgia’s territory. ArmRusGazprom has a monopoly on supplying and distribution of Russian gas in the Armenian market.
