International Gynecology Congress kicks off in Istanbul

07 April 2011 [12:12] - TODAY.AZ
The use of sound waves and robotic surgery in medical operations will be introduced in Istanbul for the first time at an international congress attended by hundreds of surgeons from different parts of the world.

"Open surgeries will become obsolete in the near future," Esengül Metin, the public relations representative of the association hosting the congress, told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review in a phone interview Wednesday. Metin said two new surgical methods on how to replace open surgical operations would be disclosed to the world of medicine for the first time.

The Fifth International Minimal Invasive Gynecology Congress, organized by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, or AAGL, will be hosted for the first time in Istanbul by the Turkish Gynecological Endoscopy Association between April 7-9.

"Surgery with robots is one of the new methods [that will be presented for the first time at the congress],” Metin said, adding that such a method would enable doctors to perform operations with a simple joystick, thus eliminating all the usual complications that accompany regular open surgical operations. “The other new surgery method is related to the use of sound waves in surgical interventions, none of which has been applied before."
