Iranian top official: U.S. President's congratulation on Novruz is "ridiculous"

Iranian Parliamentary Speaker Ali Larijani named U.S. President Barack Obama’s congratulatory letter on the occasion of Novruz as "unfortunate and laughable", the IRNA news agency reported.

During the Novruz holiday Obama congratulated all Americans and people abroad who celebrate Novruz, international media reported. In his congratulatory letter, addressed to the Iranian people, Obama said he would support them in the fight for freedom.

"Obama's congratulatory letter was a ludicrous message, for the head-of-state. Obama addressed the people, not as the head of a big state, but as the head of the Green Party in one of Europe's provincial zones."

He said the congratulatory message was instructive to the Iranians. "With this letter, the United States showed its backstage play in a quest to hold a dialogue with Iran and the Iranian people," Larijani said.
