Ombudsman: Number of prisoners in Georgia rises every year

The number of prisoners in Georgia is growing every year, said in the Ombudsman’s report on 2010.

The report says that international studies have shown that Georgia ranks one of the first places in the world for the number of prisoners. According to statistical calculations, 538 prisoners account for every 100,000 citizens, which is the second indicator in Europe after Russia and the sixth worldwide among 216 countries.

Some 23,864 prisoners served sentences in Georgia by Dec.31, 2010. Also, the CE’s annual report, published on March 22, 2010, which reflects research conducted in 2008, creates a visual representation on tendencies in the statistics of the Georgian penitentiary system.

In accordance with this document, Georgia ranks first in Europe for small size of area allocated for per prisoner.
