Kars municipality pending court decision for removal of Turkish-Armenian friendship monument

The results of tender for removal of the Turkish-Armenian friendship monument in Kars, Turkey will be announced after the relevant court decision sending to the local municipality, spokesperson for the Kars municipality Ozlem Ozturk said.

He said Erzurum Administrative Court is expected to pass written decision soon. "Removal of the monument was temporarily stopped by the court decision before. Erzurum Administrative Court canceled that decision. No we are waiting for the court decision in written form. Then we will announce the results of the tender for removal of the monument".

The court stopped the removal process after the monument sculptor Mehmet Aksoy’s appeal, but Erzurum court canceled this decision.

Kars municipality decided to remove the monument on February 1, 2011. "The Monument of Humanity", symbolizing the Turkish-Armenian friendship started to be built in 2008, but its construction has not been completed yet. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during his recent visit to Kars that all strange constructions which violate historic-architectural style should be removed. He called the above-mentioned monument as a "dirty construction".
