Turkey eyes $30 bln in trade with Africa in a few years

24 March 2011 [13:39] - TODAY.AZ
Turkish President Abdullah Gül said Wednesday that Turkey targets a trade volume of $30 billion with African countries in the next few years.

At a press conference before his departure for a visit to Ghana and Gabon, Gül said Turkey's move to expand relations with Africa was not based only on commercial goals but was an integrated policy that covered development and the growth of the continent.

Gül will be the first Turkish president ever to visit Ghana and Gabon. It is also Gül's fourth tour of sub-Saharan African countries.

"We attach special importance to improving our relations with African countries within the scope of our policies toward Africa," Gül told reporters.

Turkey has embassies in 22 African countries and will increase this number to 32 by 2013. Gül said Turkey's trade with African countries totaled $5 billion in 2003 and reached $16 billion in 2010.

"But it is not enough. Our goal is to make it 30 billion in a few years," he said.
