Iran praises North Korea's "resistance" to US

01 March 2011 [10:51] - TODAY.AZ
Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has praised North Korea's “resistance to US pressures,” calling for stronger Tehran-Pyongyang relations, Press TV reported.

Salehi made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting with North Korea's Deputy Foreign Minister Pak Kil Yon in Tehran.

“Today, the US allies [in the region] are collapsing and the counties are trying to keep their distance from the United States,” Salehi said as popular revolutions continue to sweep autocratic regimes across the Middle East and North Africa, IRNA reported.

Inspired by the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, people in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain have been staging massive street protests to press the regimes in their countries to step down.

Pak, for his part, called for expansion of bilateral ties between North Korea and Iran, especially in the field of economic cooperation.

The North Korean deputy foreign minister, who is on an official visit to Iran, met with Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi on Tuesday.

Pak said that Tehran and Pyongyang are in the same camp in their fight against "arrogant powers."

Rahimi, for his part, said that a strong Tehran-Pyongyang ties is "a thorn in the eyes of world's arrogant powers."
