Tbilisi fixed-route taxi drivers start mass strike

25 February 2011 [18:45] - TODAY.AZ
Most Tbilisi residents today were late for work or were not able to go to work due to fixed-route taxi drivers announcing a strike this morning.

As the drivers say, after holding a tender by the Tbilisi City Hall on the provision of the city with fixed-route taxis, the city authorities raised taxes. If drivers now pay around $5-7 per day, after the entry into force of new rules from March 1, they will be forced to transfer $12-15 to the budget.

Drivers say that they cannot in such circumstances maintain their families and there is no other way except strike. It should be noted that fixed-route taxi is very popular in Tbilisi and their services are used by a third of all passengers of public transport.
