Turkish FM says not correct to compare Iran with Egypt

14 February 2011 [12:10] - TODAY.AZ
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the course of history could not be reversed in the Middle East, adding that recent developments in the region led to onset of a historic transition process.

In a televised interview with the CNN-Turk News Channel, Davutoglu said, "what is critical for the time being is to prevent recent process in the Middle East from causing a instability. Each country and each society experience similar things. Now, Egypt has been passing through a transition process. We hope that the Egyptian army will well handle this process and withdraw from power after ensuring democracy in the country."

"Israel is one of the countries that should criticize itself. Israel has been heading towards an isolation in the region," he said.

Davutoglu said that Syria also needed some political and economic reforms.

Asked about Iran, Davutoglu said that it was not correct to compare Iran with Egypt, adding, "Iran has a more dynamic political structure with rivalry between opposite groups. While Hosni Mubarak had ruled Egypt for the last three decades, Iran changed five presidents."

Referring to recent developments in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Davutoglu said, "there are some allegations that Turkey's former Ambassador in Lefkosa Kaya Turkmen was punished. These are totally baseless allegations. On the contrary, we consider Turkmen as a highly experienced diplomat and we want to benefit from his experiences in Ankara."

"Turkey has been making great efforts for Turkish Cypriots for the last 30 years. We want the TRNC to crown our efforts by strengthening its economy. However, TRNC economy has been suffering a serious weakness and it needs urgent political and economic reforms. Turkey wants a powerful and free TRNC. Appointment of Halil Ibrahim Akca as Turkey's new Ambassador in Lefkosa is not a personal issue. We have appointed an experienced bureaucrat to help the TRNC to make reforms easily," Davutoglu added.
