Iranian President's special envoy: Iran's share in Caspian Sea much more than 20%

Special envoy of Iranian president on Caspian issues Mohammad Mehdi Akhundzadeh told reporters that Iran's share in the Caspian Sea is much more than 20% under the treaties dated 1921 and 1940, IRINN TV channel's official website reports.

Akhundzadeh made his statement after a two-day meeting of five littoral states' representatives, which opened in Tehran Nov.9. Akhundzadeh said that the littoral states have realized that Iran's project may help other countries in the Caspian Sea. He didn't specify which project he meant.

He added that the Caspian Sea is the sea of peace and friendship, and Iran's approach in this matter corresponds with international standards. According to Akhundzadeh, the current situation and the events day by day increase Iran's presence in the Caspian Sea.

The Caspian states' summit will be held in Baku on November 18. In November 2003, the Caspian countries signed the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea.

In July 1998, Russia and Kazakhstan signed an agreement on the delimitation of the northern part of the Caspian Sea in order to exercise sovereign rights for subsoil use.

On Nov. 29, 2001 and Feb.2 7, 2003, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan signed an agreement on the delimitation of the Caspian Sea.

Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement on the delimitation of adjacent sections of the Caspian Sea on May 14, 2003.
