Turkmen president: Turkmenistan needs to strengthen ties with Iran

27 March 2010 [13:18] - TODAY.AZ
On March 27, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov will make a working visit to Iran to attend celebrations of the regional holiday - Nowruz Bayram.
On this eve, at the government meeting, he drew attention to "the need to strengthen comprehensive ties with its neighbors, including Iran, cooperation with which is one of the key vectors of foreign policy strategy of the country."

The press service of the Turkmen government reported that heads of several neighboring countries have been invited to these celebrations in Tehran.

"With their huge economic and resource potential, Turkmenistan and Iran are increasingly expressing their mutual interest in mutually enriching the many-years experience of fruitful cooperation, reinforcing it with new and new large-scale projects implemented in the interests of the entire region," the same source said.

Turkmenistan has significantly increased exports of natural gas to the northern provinces of Iran, putting into operation an additional pipeline from large field Dovletabat in January 2010. The two countries jointly implement a project of railway corridor between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf countries.

Press office of the Turkmen government says that "despite the informal character of the multilateral meeting, the upcoming working visit of the Turkmen leader could be viewed as a new bright page in the centuries-old chronicle of Turkmen-Iranian relations."

Starting from this year, Novruz is for the first time celebrated as an international holiday.

This decision was confirmed with a special resolution of 64th session of UN General Assembly, a draft of which was developed with the participation of Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey.
