18 March 2010 [16:45] - TODAY.AZ
UN Secretary General spoke about the position of the organization towards Georgia in his interview with the Russian Echo Moskvy Radio during his visit to Moscow.

Ban ki Moon said that peace in Georgia should be maintained by the mechanisms, which are in force today.

When questioned which side he supported in the August war, Ban ki Moon said the organization did its best to maintain peace in the region.

"We had been conducting discussions in Geneva before the August war, in which UN, EU, Russia and representatives of other countries were involved. These discussions are underway at present, too. There were some achievements, when we found specific mechanisms, which would avoid new crisis. This is very significant aspect. This mechanism should be worked out again. I even appointed my new representative to the Geneva consultations a while ago," Ban ki Moon said.

Anchor of the program, Aleksei Venediktov put question about the plans of the UN to deploy its observer mission in the bordering regions of Georgia's occupied areas.

Ban said the peace in conflict zones should be kept by those forces, which were stationed there today.

UN Secretary-General is visiting Moscow March 17-19. A key point of his agenda is the situation around Gaza and the Palestinian Autonomy.
