Georgian drivers object to rise in transit tax by Turkey

Georgian citizens will have to pay 600-1,200 EUROs for transit in Turkey, Giorgi Tabatadze, the director of the consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told media today.

Payment of the increased tax will be obligatory for vehicles having foreign VINs and the trucks with closed body regardless of its weight, if it can carry cargo.

"Under the decree of the Minister of Transport of the Republic of Turkey, the amendment will refer not only to Georgian, but all those foreigners and Turks too, whose vehicles transit VINs or foreign VINs," Tabatadze said and added that the transit cost for loaded cars will be 1,200 EURO and for empty ones - 600EURO.

Georgian drivers object to the growth of the transit tax, though they were not charged for crossing the border this time.

The assembled at the Sarfi exit-point today to express their protest.

They complain the transit of vehicles from Germany will become impossible, because they prices of such vehicles in Georgia will grow to unaffordable number.
