Georgia's opposition leader meets Russian FM

05 March 2010 [18:05] - TODAY.AZ
Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, met with Georgia’s ex-parliamentary speaker and leader of Democratic Movement-United Georgia party, Nino Burjanadze, in Moscow on March 4.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a press release that Lavrov and Burjanadze talked about “various aspects of current difficult Russian-Georgian relations.”

“It was noted, that despite continued crisis and absence of diplomatic relations between Russia and Georgia, ways out of this deadlock situation should be found. Normal relations between our countries are required for peaceful development in Trans-Caucasus in new conditions,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Echoing Russian PM Vladimir Putin’s remarks made at a meeting with Burjanadze on the same day, the Russian Foreign Ministry also said that for restoring relations, Moscow pins hopes on support of those politicians in Georgia, who “realistically look at the current situation in the region.”

Burjanadze is a second Georgian politician, after Irakli Alasania, leader of opposition Alliance for Georgia, to meet with Russia’s Foreign Minister after the August war. Alasania met with Lavrov on a sideline of Munich security conference in February.
