05 March 2010 [16:27] - TODAY.AZ
Georgia is much closer to the EU than other countries in the region, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said today in Tbilisi at a joint press conference with Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze.

Spain currently chairs the EU.

The Spanish minister discussed a wide range of issues between Georgia and the EU at today's meeting with Vashadze.

"We are in favor of deepening relations between Tbilisi and Brussels," Moratinos said.

He stressed that the sides discussed agreements that are ready for signing.

"There is an agreement on visa simplfication, which will improve the situation of Georgians in Europe," Moratinos said.

The EU representative stressed that Georgia is "close to the associated membership in the EU."

"The purpose of our visit is to develop a timetable of cooperation with Georgia, which must ensure close cooperation between the EU and Georgia," he stressed.

In turn, Vashadze emphasized that Moratinos is a friend of Georgia, which is one of the first countries to send a representative to Georgia after the 2008 August war and makes every effort to ensure the nation's security and integrity.

"Moratinos is a person who is committed to the position of territorial integrity. His ideas are the convergence of Georgia and the EU. Our meeting was interesting and productive," he stressed.

The EU intends to review Georgia's public policy in the occupied territories.
