Iranian official: IAEA appeals to several countries on providing Iran with 20-percent enriched uranium

IAEA Head Yukiya Amano introduced new proposals on providing Iran with 20-percent enriched uranium for the Tehran reactor to several countries besides the U.S., France and Russia, Iran's representative to IAEA Ali Asgar Soltanieh said.

He did not name the countries that received the proposals.

"The IAEA head recommended not to name these countries, because now they are awaiting answers from them,"  he said.

In December 2009, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) offered Iran to transfer 1,200 kg of 3.5-percent enriched uranium to Russia and receive a 20-percent enriched uranium from France in order to provide fuel for the Tehran nuclear reactor. Iran has not given a concrete answer to this proposal.

The Tehran laboratory reactor was built 40 years ago by the United States and its main function is to produce medicine. Acquiring 19.75-percent uranium from Argentina, Iran provided the laboratory with fuel for the last time in 1993.
