Zurab Kharatishvili, new chairman of Georgian's Central Election Commission (CEC), said he had an ambition to make the upcoming local elections the best ever held in Georgia.

“The upcoming elections – although these are local ones – may become of decisive importance for the country’s further democratic development,” he said on Feb. 11.

“We sincerely want these elections to be the best ever held in Georgia,” Kharatishvili said.

He was speaking at a meeting with media executives and journalists, also attended by some other CEC members, including opposition representatives.

Kharatishvili said that CEC was committed to close cooperation with the media to help secure transparency of the electoral process.
