Iran wants to sell gasoline to Afghanistan

05 January 2010 [18:26] - TODAY.AZ
Ali Momammad Azad, the governor of Iran's Sistan-Baluchistan province, said local officials would set up gas stations along the border with Afghanistan, Iran's Press TV reports.
He said the move is aimed at addressing problems linked to gasoline smuggling into Afghanistan.

The low price of gasoline in Iran makes smuggling an attractive source of revenue for smugglers operating in Afghanistan, the governor added.

Iran sits on some of the largest oil and gas reserves in the world, though a lack of refining capacity forces the country to import 40 percent of its fuel needs.

Tehran spends billions per year to import gasoline for domestic consumption, only to have a large portion smuggled across the border every day.
