Audi, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, plans to stop production at its Brussels plant in February next year. The company has already informed the trade unions about this decision, Azernews reports.
The main reason for the closure of the plant is a decrease in demand and an increase in costs. The management of the Audi company plans to complete the information and consultation process on the closure of the plant within two weeks.
Worried about the future of the plant, workers recently staged an unusual protest and stole 200 car keys.
The plant, which employs three thousand people, produces only the Q8 e-tron electric car. This model has been a particular success in the Chinese market. Sales also declined due to a sharp drop in demand from China. The high level of logistics services also creates additional difficulties for the company.
Volkswagen has no plans to produce new models at the Brussels plant, as it is currently experiencing a serious crisis. It is expected that the new version of the Q8 e-tron will be produced in Mexico. According to experts, Audi may transfer this deposit to Chinese manufacturers or cooperate with some Chinese automaker operating outside Europe.
Audi announced that it is currently negotiating with a potential investor about the plant.
