Shavkat Mirziyoyev approves nuke plant agreement with Russia

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved the agreement between the governments of Uzbekistan and Russia on cooperation in construction of a nuclear power plant on the territory of Uzbekistan, Uzbek media reported.

The document was signed on Sept. 7 in Moscow by the prime ministers of the two countries, following the 19th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation.

The agreement provides for cooperation in design and construction of a nuclear power plant consisting of two power units utilizing a water-cooled power reactor of the Russian design with a set capacity of each power unit up to 1.2 gigawatts.

Earlier it was reported that the area near Lake Tudakul on the border of Navoi and Bukhara regions had been chosen as a potential site for construction of a nuclear power plant.

An official visit to Uzbekistan by Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled for Oct.18-19.
