Turkmen, Russian presidents mull prospects of trade, economic co-op

A telephone conversation took place between Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, the Turkmen government said in a message.

The two presidents stated the friendly nature of the Turkmen-Russian relations being built on the principles of mutual respect, constructiveness and strategic partnership, the message said.

The parties discussed priority issues of interstate cooperation in the context of agreements reached at the highest level, and the existing substantial potential for mutually beneficial efforts in various fields.

In this regard, they noted the important role of the joint intergovernmental commission in the practical implementation of the outlined plans for bilateral cooperation and the development of its new promising directions.

The key directions of partnership include trade and economic sphere, where there are great opportunities for diversifying productive contacts, increasing the volume and expanding the range of the items of trade turnover, stimulating business and investment activity.

The key directions of partnership also include energy, transport and communications sector, which are among the basic segments of the global economy, as well as a number of other spheres, the Turkmenistan State News Agency reported.

A good example of long-term bilateral cooperation is the close cooperation established between Turkmenistan and the biggest regions and subjects of the Russian Federation, as well as successful work of the leading companies of the Russian Federation in Turkmenistan, the report said.

An exchange of views took place on a number of topical aspects of the regional and global agenda.

About 190 companies with Russian capital operate in Turkmenistan. The ARETI International Croup holding (formerly ITERA) has been operating since 2009 in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea on the basis of the production sharing agreement.

At the same time, Russia's Gazprom, a traditional trade partner, completely stopped purchasing Turkmen gas in 2016.

The strategic partnership agreement between Turkmenistan and Russia was signed in Ashgabat on October 2, 2017.
