Iranian airline: Purchase of Sukhoi SuperJet 100 planes not agenda

Qeshm Air has no current plans to purchase Sukhoi SuperJet 100 planes from Russia, the head of the Iranian carrier said.

Mahmoud Shekarabi told reporters on April 30 that the purchase of Sukhoi SuperJet 100 passenger planes is "not on the company’s agenda".

He, however, added that the purchase of the Russian-made aircraft may take precedence over other planes in the future, taking into account the recent developments around the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and the world powers.

The remarks by the Iranian official came shortly after two leading Iranian airlines, Aseman Airlines and Iran Air Tours, announced that they had signed agreements to buy a collective of 40 Sukhoi SuperJet 100 planes from Russia.

Shekarabi further said that the carrier faces no problem to finance its purchases, noting that Qeshm Air is now in talks with Canada's flag-carrier airline Bombardier to buy 10 planes.

US President Donald Trump in January set a 120-day deadline for US lawmakers and European allies to "fix" his predecessor Barack Obama's main foreign policy achievement or face a US exit from the nuclear deal.
