Russia's Gazprom in 2017 will increase the purchase of Central Asian gas up to 20 billion cubic meters and intends to keep this volume next year, Russian media quoted representative of Gazprom Export Andrei Zotov as saying.

"Following the meetings of the leaders of Russia, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, agreements have been reached to increase supplies in 2017 to about 20 billion cubic meters and keep the same volume in 2018," he said.

Gazprom ceased gas purchases from Turkmenistan's Turkmengaz on January 1, 2016. At the same time, since Jan. 1, 2016, Gazprom has increased the purchase of natural gas from Uzbekistan. Deals to increase purchases of Uzbek gas were reached in late December 2015.

In early April 2017, Gazprom signed a five-year contract with Uzbekistan to buy 4 billion cubic meters of gas a year starting in 2018. Also, Gazprom and Uzbekneftegaz signed an agreement on joint exploration and organization of engineering and innovation works.

Earlier, Deputy Chairman of Gazprom's Management Committee Alexander Medvedev did not rule out the resumption of the purchase of gas from Turkmenistan.
