EU to provide assistance for agriculture development in Uzbekistan

The European Union intends to provide financial support to the agricultural sector of Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan and the European Union signed a financial agreement on the implementation of the "horticulture development" project, the Foreign Ministry reported on July 18.

The document was undersigned by Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov, who arrived in Brussels to attend the next meeting of the Cooperation Council "Uzbekistan-European Union," and Commission's Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development Stefano Manservisi.

The EU will allocate a grant of 21.5 million euros, according to the agreement. 

The funds will be used to modernize and strengthen the material and technical base of scientific research institutes under Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources.

Within the framework of the visit, Kamilov also met with Secretary General of the European External Action Service Helga Schmidt.

The sides discussed the priority directions of further deepening of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the EU, taking into account the readiness of the parties to strengthen and develop cooperation.

Uzbekistan as the most populous country in the very heart of Central Asia is an important partner for the EU.

The EU mainly focuses on the projects on the development of rural areas in Uzbekistan, in particular, improving irrigation infrastructure, introducing renewable energy in agribusiness, as well as assisting program on creation of jobs in the country's regions.

Relations between the EU and Uzbekistan are based on the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) which entered into force in 1996. Since this time, the EU has allocated considerable amount of money to develop the domestic industry of the country.

Financial aid in the amount of 168 million euros was approved for this Central Asian country for 2014-2020. These funds will be used to improve the irrigation infrastructure, introduce renewable energy sources in agribusiness, and promote a program to create new jobs in the regions.
