Many restrictions have been removed in accordance with agreements reached with Russia, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said, commenting on the results of the talks with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev in Istanbul.

The meeting discussed the issues of bilateral cooperation, Anadolu Agency reported referring to Yildirim.

On May 22, Russian Deputy Prime Ministers Arkady Dvorkovich and his Turkish counterpart Mehmet Simsek have signed a joint statement on mutual lifting of trade restrictions.

"One more step has been taken towards normalizing bilateral relations. In accordance with the agreements, many restrictions have been removed. During May 2017, restrictions regarding Turkish companies will be lifted," the Turkish prime minister said.

He mentioned that the limitations of the Russian side covered six directions: contractors, technical consulting services, travel agency activities, tourism management, hotel business, participation in state tenders and woodworking industry.

Yildirim then touched upon the topic of delivering tomatoes to Russia.

"Tomatoes turned into a symbol of Turkish-Russian relations. In fact, serious progress has been made on many other issues. Russia is informed of the sensitivity of the Turkish side regarding the supply of tomatoes. I think that it will take a little more time to resolve the issue with tomatoes," he said.

A separate point of the joint Turkish-Russian statement signed in Istanbul was dedicated to this issue.

"The first step stipulates the seasonal supply of agricultural products. That is, new steps will become possible with regards to seasonal needs. In the subsequent stages, of course, new discussions will take place on this issue," Yildirim added.

He pointed out that Russia acts from the standpoint of protecting local producers of agricultural products, and Turkey respects its position.

Although Turkey and Russia could mend relations after a long-crisis due to Turkey’s downing a Russian warplane in November 2015, a number of sanctions imposed on Turkish goods, as well as a strict visa regime on Turkish nationals have not been lifted for a long time.

The meeting held between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on May 3 has marked the "full-format" restoration of bilateral ties and focused on trade restrictions and barriers lifting. During this meeting, Russia and Turkey agreed upon comprehensive settlement of restrictions in bilateral economic relations.
