Turkey vows to strengthen ties with Uzbekistan

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev had a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, who is on an official visit in Tashkent, on April 26, the Uzbek national news agency UzA reported.

The sides hailed the dynamic development of the Uzbekistan-Turkey relations in line with the agreements reached at the bilateral summit talks, held in Samarkand on November 17-18, 2016.

Special attention was paid to the expansion of mutually beneficial economic and investment cooperation, practical implementation of projects on modernization of tourism infrastructure in Uzbekistan with the participation of leading Turkish companies, and other issues.

Cavusoglu thanked the Uzbek side for support to the Turkish companies’ projects in Uzbekistan and stressed the readiness for further development of full-scale bilateral cooperation.

The Turkish minister also held talks with his Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov.

The ministers discussed the state and prospects for the development of bilateral relations in the political, trade-economic, investment, military-technical, cultural-humanitarian and other spheres.

Following the talks, the ministers signed a program of cooperation between the foreign ministries for 2017-2018 and spoke at a joint news conference.

Addressing a briefing in Tashkent, Cavusoglu said that Presidents of Uzbekistan and Turkey, Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Recep Tayyip Erdogan plan to hold talks, which will give a new momentum to the bilateral relations, by late 2017.

Cavusoglu noted that the Turkey-Uzbekistan relations should be based on good neighborliness, mutual respect and equality.

He added that both countries would organize meetings as part of their joint economic council between May 24 and May 26 that would also see the attendance of Turkey's economy minister.

Kamilov, in his turn, underlined that both sides explored options to improve relations in key areas, including trade, tourism and health.

Turkey became the first country to recognize Uzbekistan’s independence on 16 December 1991. The diplomatic relations were established between two countries on 4 March 1992.

More than 90 bilateral agreements and protocols were signed to form the legal basis of relations and numerous mutual high-level visits were carried out. 

Uzbekistan occupies an important place in terms of regional peace and stability with its population of nearly 30 million, geostrategic position, deep-rooted history, rich cultural values and economic potential. Turkey attaches great importance to the improvement of cooperation with brotherly Uzbekistan in all fields and maintains its willingness to further relations strengthened by the close bonds between Turkish and Uzbek people. 

There are currently 700 companies in Uzbekistan with Turkish capital, 100 of which are representation offices. They carry out activities in the sectors of textile, commitment, food, hotel management, building materials, plastic, medication, and service. There are 114 companies in Turkey with Uzbek capital. 

In February, Turkey and Uzbekistan signed cooperation agreement to boost economic relation at the Turkey-Uzbekistan .
