Turkey marks 102nd anniversary of Gallipoli victory

19 March 2017 [13:30] - TODAY.AZ

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an attended the Çanakkale Victory Day celebrations in Gallipoli, Turkey.

"The Turkish people are willing to sacrifice everything in the name of their homeland, flag, adhan, freedom and future," said Erdo?an.

"Our aim is to be worthy of our ancestors who changed the course of history in Çanakkale."

The ceremony marked the 102 year anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli, a military campaign which eventually turned the tide in favor of the Ottoman Empire fighting against the Allied Powers during the First World War, Yeni Safak reports.

"The Republic of Turkey is not our first government, but it will be our last. Ottoman history is ours, Seljuk history is ours, and all the states that have existed in our history spanning thousands of years are ours," said Erdo?an.

"It was only yesterday that mothers and fathers were sending their children to Çanakkale saying, 'Either be martyred or a wounded veteran.' This is the type of people Turks are," Erdo?an said.
