Kazakhstan has set the correct direction of its economy towards increasing the efficiency of the energy sector and continues to explore new oil and gas fields.

The deposits of light oil and gas are discovered in the Devonian subsalt raising Ansagan, Kazinform reports.

The Ansagan field is located in Zhylyoi region of Atyrau district, where identified oil and gas horizons occur relatively deeper than in the Tengiz field. Forecasts for estimated reserves are high and greater part of exploration work is aimed at confirming the predicted hydrocarbon reserves.

The Ministry of Energy said high debits of light oil obtained in Ansagan testify for a large resource potential of the subsalt sediments at greater depths on that territory.

"It is planned to conduct appraisal work on the Ansagan field to expand research work on the entire contract area with the formulation of exploration drilling on the prospective areas Maksat, Prorva Glubokaya and others, confirmed by detailed seismic studies,” the Ministry reported.

One of the leading sectors of Kazakhstan's economy is oil and gas sector. Independent experts’ estimate of extracting oil reserves defined volume of oil reserves in the whole state which amounts to 3,900 million tons. This number is defined by experts at the end of 2012. Such indicators occur, mostly, due to the presence of the Kashaganoil and gas field in Kazakhstan, which is the leader among the oil fields around the world in terms of prospective reserves.

Kazakhstan enters the top 15 countries in the world when it comes to essential oil reserves, having 3 percent of the world's total oil reserves. There are 172 oil fields, of which more than 80 are under development. More than 90 percent of oil reserves are concentrated in the 15 largest oil fields - Tengiz, Kashagan, Karachaganak, Uzen, Zhetybai, Zhanazhol, Kalamkas, Kenkiyak, Karazhanbas, Kumkol, North Buzachi, Alibekmola, Central and Eastern Prorva, Kenbai, Korolevskoye. Oil fields can be found in six of the fourteen provinces of Kazakhstan.

Astana has bumped up its oil output annually over the last 3 decades, increasing from 59.5 to 81.8 million tons per year between 2004 and 2014. This increase is a part of Kazakhstan’s plan to reach 130 million tons per year by 2020, though infrastructural issues have slowed growth.

As much as 62.3 percent of Kazakhstan’s economy accounts for crude and refined petroleum. The country’s biggest customer is China, whose 2014 purchases accounted for roughly 25 percent of Kazakhstan’s oil economy.
