New UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres takes oath at general assembly meeting

Antonio Guterres took the oath of office at the UN General Assembly, Sputnik reported.

Recently-elected UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres took the oath of office in front of at a meeting of the UN General Assembly on Monday.

"I, Antinio Guterres, solemnly swear to exercise in all loyalty, discretion and consciousness the functions entrusted to me as Secretary-General of the UN to discharge these functions and regulate my conduct with the interest of the United Nations only in view," he said.

Earlier during the meeting, UN General Assembly members’ representatives paid tribute to the outgoing UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Ban said it was an honor for him to serve the United Nations and wished Guterres success.

Guterres, 67, served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995-2002. Three years later, Guterres became UN High Commissioner for Refugees and served in that position until 2015.

Guterres will assume the functions of UN Secretary-General on January 1, and will hold that post for the next five years.
