Rashid Alimov, secretary general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), spoke about the SCO observation mission’s upcoming participation in the Uzbek presidential election.

In an interview with the Russian TASS news agency, Alimov said that the SCO secretariat has already started monitoring the Uzbek and foreign media outlets.

"It is clear that the upcoming election will be competitive,” he said. “There is no doubt that the results of the upcoming election will reflect the interests of the Uzbek people and become a brilliant example of the consolidation of society for the sake of Uzbekistan’s development and prosperity."

"The Uzbek presidential election is of great importance, especially for the friendly Uzbek people, as well as the whole region," he added.

"Uzbekistan has made and continues to make a significant contribution to the SCO establishment and development,” he said. “This was clearly demonstrated during Uzbekistan’s successful chairmanship in the SCO.”

“The decisions made at the Tashkent SCO summit are of historical importance to the organization, but the summit has become a major event of international importance," he said.

Alimov expressed the hope that Uzbekistan will continue to actively participate in the organization and make greater contributions to the development of multilateral cooperation.

The SCO was established in 2001. The SCO members now are China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Afghanistan, Iran, Mongolia and Belarus are the SCO observer-countries, while Turkey, Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka, Armenia, Cambodia and Nepal are dialogue partners.
